WEEK-4 LEVEL-1 PHONICS “Pet Sounds & Phonics:”

This beautifully designed Animals & Pet-Themed Lesson Pack for Early Years Educators and Muslim Montessori practitioners integrates auditory activities with Islamic values and joyful learning. Covering Environmental Sounds, Voice Sounds, Body Percussion, Sounds made by objects , Alliteration, and Rhyming, these sessions use age-appropriate materials like pet puppets, rhyming cards, soft toys, and instruments.

Each lesson begins with a gentle Islamic greeting and follows a structure that builds phonemic awareness, communication skills, creative expression, and social confidence in little learners. Lessons are divided into Large Group and Small Group formats, making them ideal for nurseries, Islamic preschools, and homeschooling.

Large Group Sessions (5 Lessons)

1. Pet Sounds

Islamic Greeting: “Assalamu Alaikum, little sound explorers! Today, we will discover the wonderful ways Allah made animals talk!”

• Focus: Voice Sounds

• Objective: To make sounds with my voice

• Summary: Children mimic and create pet sounds, fostering auditory discrimination and expressive confidence through fun animal play.

2. Which Pet?

Islamic Greeting: “Assalamu Alaikum! Allah has made every creature with a unique sound—can you listen and match them today?”

• Focus: Environmental Sounds

• Objective: To listen and identify sounds

• Summary: A puppet-based listening game where children match pet puppets with sounds, enhancing environmental sound awareness.

3. Keep the Beat

Islamic Greeting: “Bismillah! Let’s make rhythms with our hands and feet, as our Prophet ﷺ loved poetry and rhythm!”

• Focus: Body Percussion

• Objective: To join in with a body percussion pattern

• Summary: Children explore body sounds like tapping and clapping through rhymes, improving rhythm and motor skills.

4. Clog the Duck

Islamic Greeting: “Assalamu Alaikum! Let’s play with words that rhyme, as Allah has gifted us with clever tongues!”

• Focus: Rhyming Words

• Objective: To recognise and match rhyming words

• Summary: Children engage with rhyming words through a fun character who “eats” rhymes, building phonological awareness.

5. The Pet Shop

Islamic Greeting: “Peace be upon you! Let’s visit our pretend pet shop and find pets with pretty names that sound alike!”

• Focus: Alliteration

• Objective: To listen to sounds at the beginning of words

• Summary: Using puppets and alliterative phrases, children explore initial sounds in words through playful repetition.

Small Group Sessions (5 Activities)

1. Rhyming Pairs

• Focus: Rhyming Words

• Objective: To hear sounds that rhyme

• Summary: Children match rhyming words using picture cards and games, enhancing their ability to tune into rhymes.

2. Guess the creature

• Focus: Environmental Sounds

• Objective: To identify animal sounds

• Summary: A guessing game where children identify animals through clues and sounds, enriching vocabulary and listening skills.

3. Who’s at the Vet

• Focus: Alliteration

• Objective: To recognise words with the same sound

• Summary: A fun rhyme-based activity where children chant and group pet names with the same beginning sound.

4. Sound Explorers

• Focus: Instrumental Sounds

• Objective: To use instruments to make sounds

• Summary: Children explore different musical instruments and their sounds, using a toy cat and group participation.

5. Animal/Pet Movements

• Focus: Body Percussion

• Objective: To make sounds using my body

• Summary: Using movement and sounds, children act like pets and sing songs to reinforce body percussion awareness.
