PHONICS ar, or, ur

The phonics sounds ar, or, and ur are common letter combinations that help children read and spell many words. The “ar” sound is made when a and r come together, like in words such as car, star, farm, and park. This sound is heard in the middle of words and sounds like “ah” combined with the “r” sound. The next sound, “or”, is made when o and r come together, as in words like fork, storm, horn, and more. Finally, the “ur” sound is formed when u and r are together, like in words such as fur, turn, burn, and surf. The ur sound is similar to the “er” sound but with a little r at the end, and it is usually heard in the middle of words. These sounds are helpful for early readers to recognize because they appear in many common words.
